안녕하세요? 조선대학교 인문학연구원 인문데이터과학연구소에서 “데이터를 통해 본 언어습득 (Language acquisition through the lens of data)”라는 제목으로 튜토리얼 시리즈를 실시하고 있습니다.
세번째 튜토리얼 주제인 ELAN는 오디오 및 비디오 자료에 주석을 추가하고 분석하는 도구로 사용되는 프로그램입니다. 영유아기 아동의 발화 혹은 상호작용 비디오에 다양한 언어 및 비언어적 요소를 주석으로 추가하고, 미디어 파일과 시간을 동기화하여 세부적인 분석을 할 수 있습니다. University College London의 Rana Abu-Zhaya 박사님의 연구발표에 이어 조선대학교의 김수한님이 ELAN 사용법에 관한 발표를 한국어로 진행합니다.

Unpacking the multimodal nature of early language environments: Evidence from naturalistic interactions with infants
Infants’ environments are replete with multisensory cues: caregivers use infant-oriented touches, gestures, facial expressions, and object motion in ways that facilitate language learning. These rich multimodal language events create meaningful learning moments from which infants can extract structure, segment speech and map words to their referents. However, despite great advances in recent decades, the study of multimodal language input, how it changes throughout development, and how it impacts early language learning is still in its infancy. In this talk, I will present data from a series of past and ongoing studies that examine the nature of multimodal language input to young infants, focusing on tactile cues and how they are coupled with speech. I will discuss the great rewards we can obtain from conducting such work and how it can help us rethink early language development. I will also share insights about the data annotation and analysis processes as well as the challenges in undertaking such research.
